In an increasingly interconnected and globalised world, English language learners need more than language skills to become effective communicators – they must also develop intercultural awareness in order to make their interactions truly successful. Intercultural awareness is a key syllabus requirement which, when allied to language skills, empowers learners to function as 21st century global citizens as they move from upper secondary schooling into higher education and the working world.
In this session, we will explore:
- How understanding cultural contexts enhances communication, empathy, and inclusion both inside and outside the classroom.
- We will examine the importance of visible aspects of culture (for example cultural traditions, food, festivals) as well as invisible elements such as attitudes, values and beliefs.
- We will look at practical strategies for integrating and developing an enhanced awareness of cultural factors via appropriate materials, opportunities for learner reflection, and collaborative work.
- You will leave the session with practical ideas to build your learners’ intercultural competence, alongside their linguistic proficiency.
